Allegations related to United Way Worldwide
A message to our donors, supporters, and partners
We continue to monitor the reported allegations of misconduct at United Way Worldwide, specifically allegations of harassment and retaliation against female employees who reported incidents of harassment. In addition, United Way Worldwide has announced certain budget reduction measures undertaken in response to the financial challenges at the organization during the pandemic. Please know that these matters in no way involve nor are expected to impact United Way of Greater Portland or our important work within the community.
The Board of Trustees at United Way Worldwide has released a statement related to the findings from their internal investigation of these allegations, along with several statements from key leaders within the organization. Separately, Brian Gallagher, the current President & CEO of United Way Worldwide, has notified the Board of his intention to step down from his position effective March 1, 2021. On February 19, the United Way Worldwide Board announced that Neeraj Mehta will serve as Interim President & CEO.
We will continue to closely monitor this matter, the steps UWW takes to learn from this investigation, and the plans they put in place to ensure a strong and healthy workplace.
Although UWGP is a member of the United Way network, local United Ways in Maine and across the country are independently governed with our own leadership, governance, policies, and practices and operate in accordance with comprehensive operating standards as members of United Way Worldwide.
UWGP is deeply committed to maintaining a safe and inclusive work environment free from harassment. We value our employees and have in place the internal policies and procedures to protect them. Maintaining a safe and inclusive culture are our organization’s core values and we strive to encourage this culture internally and with our external partners.
We thank you for your continued partnership and support of the mission of United Way of Greater Portland. Through the generous support of our community, our organization remains financially strong and highly effective and focused on supporting and strengthening Greater Portland as our country deals with the impacts of the pandemic.
