Your United Way

United Way of Greater Portland has been making a difference in our community for almost 80 years. In 1929, Walter G. David founded the Portland Community Chest, the forerunner of United Way. Within months, the Great Depression brought Portland to its knees. But David and other local leaders rose to the challenge, responding to unemployment, illness and hunger. Thus, the precedent for adapting to our community’s changing needs was set and is still practiced today at United Way of Greater Portland.

Through unique partnerships and comprehensive approaches, United Way of Greater Portland addresses the complex issues in our community and works to prevent problems from happening in the first place. With your help, we can create real, lasting change that matters to you and to our community.
