Diversity
United Way of Greater Portland is committed to the inclusion of our diverse communities in its
work. United Way actively acknowledges, respects and responds to the diversity of Greater Portland and believes that its mission is enhanced and our community is strengthened when
the opportunities, gifts, skill and abilities of all people are valued and embraced.
Our Commitment
- United Way will foster acceptance of and respect for diversity, in its broadest meaning, in Southern Maine
- As United Way develops a better understanding of diverse issues, it will share its learnings with the community and its partners
- United Way will facilitate access to health and human services among all segments of the population
- United Way will bring together staff and volunteers who broadly reflect the communities it serves
- Through targeted communications and collaborations, United Way will reach out to diverse communities in Southern Maine
United Way of Greater Portland's Diversity Cabinet was created in 2006 to help advance diversity and inclusion in the Greater Portland area. The Cabinet established the Diversity and Inclusion Special Response Fund to help support projects and build connections between diverse communities and the larger community.
2008 grant recipients included Literacy Volunteers, Woodford's Family Services, The Portland Freedom Trail, Center for Grieving Children, Tengo Voz (I Have Voice), Community Television Network and the City of Portland's Minority Health Program Public Health Division.
