Increasing Financial Stability

We envision a community in which everyone has the opportunity to achieve financial well-being. Strengthening the state earned income tax credit is one way to help us achieve that goal. UWGP recently testified in favor of a bill that strengthens this credit by increasing it from 5% of the federal earned income credit to 50% and making it refundable.

Public Hearings on the Biennial Budget

The Appropriations and Financial Affairs Committee has announced that public hearings on the proposed biennial budget will begin on March 11 and run through April. Check here for up-to-date scheduling.

As we have written in the past, the proposed biennial budget, in addition to recommending funding for numerous government programs and services, makes several policy changes. For example, the proposed biennial budget calls for eliminating the Maine Residents Property Tax and Rent Refund Program for many Maine households and dramatically modifying the General Assistance Program, a program of last resort for people in crisis.
