CA$H Greater Portland
CA$H Greater Portland (Creating Assets, Savings and Hope), managed by United Way of Greater Portland, is a partnership of community leaders and industry experts working together to help individuals and families achieve long-term financial stability. Through community and workplace outreach, these partnerships encourage individuals and families in Cumberland County to find ways to make the most of their money—increase their income and build savings—by utilizing free workshops, financial education tools, and free income tax preparation events. Visit CA$H’s web site for a listing of free workshops, local programs and services, and financial education resources.
We envision a community in which everyone has the opportunity to achieve financial stability.
The Importance and Impact of Financial Stability
Economic realities in Cumberland County:
- 63% make less than a livable wage—what is needed to meet basic needs.
- 46% lack savings to cover basic living expenses for three months if they lose their primary source of income.
- 58% do not have the financial knowledge to improve their own financial capability.
- $4 million is left unclaimed every year by individuals and families who do not apply for the federal Earned Income Tax Credit.
Complex Issues Require Strategic Investments
Free tax preparation events are the “gateway” to talking with individuals about how they can achieve financial stability and connects them to programs and services that help them make the most of their money. CA$H Greater Portland’s website and social media pages offer the community a financial education clearinghouse, including workshop listings, contact information for local programs and services, volunteer opportunities, and local and national online learning resources. In the workplace, CA$H Greater Portland offers employers a way to help their employees make the most of their money, from hosting Lunch & Learn sessions to providing access to computer-based learning and print and electronic resources.
Since 2004, CA$H Greater Portland free tax preparation events have helped 5,196 households save $960,476 in income tax preparation fees, apply for $9.35 million in federal and state income tax refunds, and receive $2.7 million in federal Earned Income Tax Credit refunds. These individuals and families have also been connected to programs and financial education resources that have helped to strengthen their household stability, including career exploration, free credit reports, and matched savings accounts.
