Director, Public Policy
The Director, Public Policy oversees the development and implementation of public policy and advocacy initiatives to drive community impact. This role is responsible for planning, developing, and executing on local, state, and federal policy work, with an emphasis on educating policymakers and growing the number of advocates.
The Director, Public Policy, will work under the strategic oversight of United Way of Greater Portland’s (UWGP) Community Impact Steering Committee (CISC) and the three Thrive2027 Goals Cabinets, and under the direction of the Senior Vice President, Community Impact at UWGP.
Success in this position will be determined by the ability of the Director to implement UWGP’s annual policy agenda, develop and advance public policy positions and advocacy efforts that help move the needle on Thrive2027’s three community-wide goals, cultivate and mobilize advocates for UWGP, and identify and measure policy and advocacy outcomes. This position requires excellent communication skills, a proven track record in public policy and advocacy work, and strong planning, measurement, and execution skills.
This is a part-time, salaried position (scheduled for approximately 20 hours per week), although has the potential for full-time status if resources and work performance permit. Due to the part-time nature of the position, outside employment may be held by the selected candidate with approval of the SVP if it does not present a conflict of interest and does not interfere with the candidate’s ability to prioritize fulfilling the responsibilities of this position.
