INSTALL SMOKE ALARMS
Sound the Alarm. Save a Life. is part of the American Red Cross’ 5-year initiative to reduce the number of preventable deaths and injuries caused by home fires. On Saturday, May 12, Red Cross volunteers, community members, business partners, and firefighters will install smoke alarms and provide fire safety education to homes in Portland, South Portland, and Westbrook. Join a three-person installation team (made up of a designated Safety Educator, Smoke Alarm Installer, and Documenter) and cover a pre-mapped zone. Training will be provided on the day of the event. DAY OF ACTION LITERACY TRAINING AND READING PROJECT
Join United Way of Greater Portland for a special Day of Action project on Thursday, May 17 from 9am-12pm at the Westbrook Community Center. Volunteers will learn tips on how to read with kids, practice with a classroom or small group, and help with a literacy-based activity. Click here to sign up before Friday, May 11. PICK UP FOOD DRIVE DONATIONS
Michael Klahr Jewish Family Services seeks volunteers on Friday, May 18 at 10am who are willing to pick up donated food from the “Stamp Out Hunger” Postal Carrier Food Drive at Salvation Army in Portland and bring it to their food pantry at 1342 Congress Street in Portland. Volunteers should have access to a vehicle and be prepared for some heavy lifting of multiple boxes of canned goods. To sign up, contact Adam Seigal, email@example.com.
BECOME TRAINED TO PROVIDE CRISIS SUPPORT TO FAMILIES
Through These Doors (TTD), formerly known as Family Crisis Services, is currently looking for volunteers and will be holding a Spring Volunteer Training on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4-7pm, May 1-June14. Members of the volunteer team offer vital support to the people who use the helplines, shelter, and outreach offices for help out of abusive relationships and life-threatening situations. After completing the training, an individual can choose from a variety of volunteer roles–helpline, support groups, fundraising, tabling events, and more.
